Six years ago, I moved to Celebration, Florida—aka “Disney’s backyard.” I’ve run races through EPCOT, mobile-ordered Dole Whip more times than I’ll admit, and watched fireworks from my Publix parking lot. Living next to Walt Disney World has taught me the art of the early rope drop, the best times to avoid crowds, and how to survive a Florida summer without melting into the pavement.
So here it is—my no-fluff, totally real local guide to Disney World. If you’re planning a trip (or considering a move), these tips will save your feet, your wallet, and maybe your marriage.
🌞 1. Go Early, Leave Proud
Rope drop is king. I’m usually in and out of the park by 11 a.m.—just in time to beat the heat and the tantrums. That first hour in the parks is chef’s kiss.
💡 Local Hack: Weekdays are gold. Avoid weekends and holidays like Cinderella avoided chores.
📲 2. The App Will Save You (and Also Break You)
Download My Disney Experience before you even think about parking. It’s your map, ride manager, mobile order tool, and bathroom locator. Without it, you’re a wandering soul in a sea of churros.
⚡ Pro Tip: Turn on push alerts for Lightning Lane and snack drops. Trust me.
📅 3. Best Times to Visit Disney (Spoiler: It’s Not Summer)
🟢 Great times to visit:
- Mid-January to early February
- Weekdays in May or September
- Right after Thanksgiving (but not too close to Christmas)
🚫 Avoid like Gaston avoids humility:
- Spring Break
- Christmas Week
- July weekends unless you enjoy boiling in a stroller traffic jam
🍴 4. Underrated Food Spots (Shhh, Don’t Tell Tourists)
Skip the hype. Here’s where locals eat:
- Columbia Harbour House (Magic Kingdom) – Upstairs = peace.
- Skipper Canteen – Adventurous, quiet, and rarely full.
- Fortuna Bakery (Celebration) – Our off-property reward stop for the best empanadas around.
🔥 Snack Hack: Mobile order Dole Whip while in line for Pirates and waltz right up when it’s ready.
đźš— 5. Disney Transportation Tricks
- Park at Disney Springs and catch a resort bus if you’re dining or resort-hopping.
- Monorail loops are the best free rides in Disney. We use them to cool off, snack-hop, or feel fancy.
- Always have: sunscreen, wipes, battery pack, and a backup shirt. You’re not above sweat. None of us are.
🕵️‍♂️ 6. Secret Spots Most People Miss (Celebration Edition)
Disney is magical—but Celebration, Florida is where the locals live that magic daily. It’s a master-planned town originally developed by Disney, and after six years here, I can confidently say: it’s not just postcard-perfect—it’s a real community with incredible charm (and snacks).
Here are my go-to spots you won’t find on your Disney app:
- Downtown Celebration – Brick streets, a lakefront promenade, and an old-school movie theater.
- Starbucks Celebration – Great for a post-run coffee or a mid-deal caffeine boost.
- Fortuna Bakery & Cafe – Empanadas, pastries, and strong coffee.
- Upper Crust Pizza – A local pizza gem near the lake.
- Columbia Restaurant – Cuban bread and sangria = date night done right.
- Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming – For your dog’s own version of Disney magic.
- Celebration Farmers Market – Held every Sunday with local vendors, fresh produce, and good vibes.
- AdventHealth Fitness Center – My daily gym and a local training hub for runDisney regulars.
🎉 Bonus Fun: I run the Celebration Marathon, Pancake Run, and Superhero 5K every year. They bring serious small-town energy and Disney-level fun.
👨‍👩‍👧 Bonus Tip for Families
We do early mornings, midday breaks, and chill evenings. No shame in going back to the hotel or home for a nap. Disney’s still there at night—and the vibe is magical without the heatstroke.
✨ Night Hack: Watch fireworks from the beach at Polynesian Resort with a Dole Whip in hand. Zero crowds. 100% magic.
